Residential Plumbing Problems and How to Fix Them

Plumbers face a variety of common residential plumbing problems every single day. We’ve put together a list of the most common of those residential plumbing problems.

Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure is a nagging problem that can be caused by a variety of factors. Common causes are clogged aerators and calcified pipes.

If the aerator is clogged, the solution is to simply unscrew the device from the faucet head and manually remove any accumulated debris.

If years of hard water exposure have left thick calcium deposits inside the water pipes, the homeowner may have to re-pipe the entire house. The first solution anyone can do at no cost. The second solution requires the services of a professional plumber like JMS Express Plumbing, and the cost can run into the thousands of dollars.

Slow-Draining Sinks

Clogged or slow draining sinks are a fact of life that most of us will face one time or another. Lots of things other than water go down the drain and form a blockage.  Hair, toothpaste, shaving cream, whiskers, and other debris can form gunky blockages.

The solution may be as simple as removing the stopper and wiping way the debris. But if the gunk ball is further down the drain or is in the sink trap (the U-shaped pipe beneath the sink), then a plumber such as JMS Express Plumbing may have to disassemble the entire draining system to clear the blockage.

Slow-Draining Tub/Shower

The same culprits that are clogging your sinks are probably responsible for clogging up your tubs and showers. Sometimes, you can remove the gooey hairballs by using needle-nose pliers or manual snaking tool. If that or a chemical drain cleaner doesn’t work it’s time to call your local plumber.

Clogged Toilets

Most clogged toilets can be fixed by using a common plunger. However, some clogs are either so deep or so impacted that a mechanical snake is required. And, in the most extreme cases, pipes are broken and need to be replaced by a professional.

Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposal jam or break at the most inopportune times such as the night before Thanksgiving. If a disposal as been jammed by soft organic material like onion or potato peelings then you can often free the blades using an Allen wrench or a key provided by the manufacturer.

If the blades are bent or jammed by a metal object then you probably need to replace the unit. Replacing a disposal isn’t easy because you are usually working in a tight space. Bringing in a plumber such as JMS Express Plumbing to replace the disposal is usually the best way to handle the problem.

Leaky Faucets

Sometimes a leaky faucet can be fixed by simply replacing a worn washer. But if an entire faucet or the cartridge assemblies needs to be replaced, then it is probably time to call in a professional.

Faulty Water Heaters

Hot water-on-demand is part of any modern household. And when the hot water fails, the results can be felt immediately. Water heaters can fail as a result of broken connections or faulty valves. But sometimes years of wear and corrosion require that the entire water heater be replaced. In any case, this is rarely a do-it-yourself project, especially if the water heater is powered by natural gas. Time to call the plumber!
